A First Course in Partial Differential Equations With Complex Variables and Transform Methods (Dover Books on Mathematics)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (October, 1995)
Author: Hans F. Weinberger
Average review score:

very thorough book, a bit dated but sophisticated
I used this book for a yearlong course in PDE's when I was an undergraduate. I really wish I had had that course before quantum mechanics, as many of the difficult mathematics there would have been cake after weinberger. This book is fairly terse but quite complete. The text can be hard to follow by onesself and I often would refer to easier books on PDE's to get over certain humps. However, weinberger covers most of the material that any undergraduate would want and does it at a relatively high level. The problems are simply posed but are quite solvable and all have answers in the back of the book. My recollection is that the book has very few typos. The discussion is more mathematically rigourous than many more popular books but not so rigourous that it is painful for someone who views the mathematics as a tool. The book isorganized into about 90 sections, each corresponding roughly to a 50 minute lecture there are problem sets of approximately 10 problems for each of these. More recent topics touching on nonlinear PDEs and the like are not here as the book was written in 1966. If you want to get a very solid background in PDEs that will leave you in good stead for conquering books like Jackson's Electrodynamics or Schiff's quantum mechanics, this is a good book. If you want a simple introduction, for limited use go somewhere else like churchill or powers.

First Fig and Other Poems (Dover Thrift Editions)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (March, 2000)
Author: Edna St. Vincent Millay
Average review score:

". . . a bucketful of gold"
"First Fig and Other Poems" is an excellent collection of work by United States poet Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950). This volume is an unabridged republication of the contents of two of her books: the 1922 edition of "A Few Figs from Thistles: Poems and Sonnets," and "Second April" (1921). The book also contains a 5-page biographical introduction.

These poems reveal a remarkable poetic voice: playful, bold, quirky, passionate, and sometimes melancholy. She often writes of romantic love from a woman's perspective. I read Millay (as exemplified by this book) as a sort of poetic "soul sister" to 19th century giant Emily Dickinson: they both share an irreverent spirit and a sensuous appreciation of the natural world.

Millay was a master of traditional poetic forms; this volume contains several sonnets, as well as other poems in various patterns of meter and rhyme. Millay's genius is that she brings to these traditional forms a charm, wit, and freshness. Many of her poems incorporate classical and literary references: to Apollo, Sappho, Helen, Homer, Guinevere, etc.

I especially like the several poems which evoke the sea and the coastline with stunning language. Consider these lines from "Exiled": "Wanting the sticky, salty sweetness / of the strong wind and shattered spray; / Wanting the loud sound and the soft sound / Of the big surf that breaks all day."

Overall, this is a diverse and enjoyable gathering of poems. Another great standout is the fantasy-flavored "The Singing-Woman from the Wood's Edge," the first-person account of a being whose "mother was a leprechaun, whose father was a friar." I should also mention "Recuerdo," from whose lines I took the title of this review. Edna St. Vincent Millay is a remarkable poet, and I highly recommend "First Fig and Other Poems."

fantastic poems
All 67 poems from "Second April" (1921) and "A Few Figs from Thistles" (1922) are collected in this book. You'll find cynical poems but also beautiful poems about nature. Edna St.Vincent Millay's gem like poems are worth to discover and you'll certainly enjoy them. Although they were created in the Jazz Age they are timeless and express feelings and thoughts that are common to us. Very recommendable collection!

Fluid Mechanics (Dover Classics of Science and Mathematics)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (January, 1995)
Author: Robert Alan Granger
Average review score:

Outstanding & Comprehensive Introduction
Clear yet rigorous approach to a complex topic. This book provides a strong foundation for the equations of fluid motion that is quite approachable. It organizes well Navier Stokes to other equations such as Euler's and Bernoulli's. A useful text for undergraduate engineering students.

This book is very popular to undergraduate engr. students
This book has been used by several universities and adopted as the course text for several years by the US Naval Academy. It is written to strengthen student's background in applied math, and has many clever example problems. The degree of difficulty is slightly greater than most other texts on the subject but it is justified in that the aim is to improve student's math prowess.

A History of the Theories of Aether & Electricity: The Classical Theories/the Modern Theories 1900-1926: Two Volumes Bound As One (Dover Classics O)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (January, 1990)
Authors: Edmund, Sir Whittaker and E. T. Whittaker
Average review score:

Essential for a serious student of physics
First I quite agree with the reviewer jnhrtmn... , so I won't repeat what he said. Physics in universities seems to be taught with little real reference to the history-- as if quantum mechanics and relativity sprung brilliantly out of someone's mind fresh out of the twentieth century. This book shows the importance of history in the development of physics-- and anyone seriously studying physics should read this book, to see how much the ideas of physics have evolved and been influenced by the past. Much of it requires a good math background--a knowledge of calculus is needed for much of it. It is sad that it is out of print--a publisher needs to make this available.

The most in your face account of physics progression.
I am an amateur physicist that thinks modern physics is more of a belief system than a science. This book is the most objective account of why science is where it is today. It is raw and readable. It leads you through the evidence as it happened. Hundreds of references. Meaty stuff, not just fluff for a book. You want insight into science you never had before, this book is a very good step.

Introduction to Numerical Analysis (Dover Books on Advanced Mathematics)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (July, 1987)
Author: Francis Begnaud Hildebrand
Average review score:

Great bargain, still suitable as an introduction
This is a reprint of the 1974 2nd edition. So what is Numerical Analysis? It's the down-and-dirty methods of approximation and interpolation of equations that don't have closed-formed mathematical solutions. Just about every real-world problem in material engineering from pipe flow, wing design, convection currents to multivariate econometrics have to resort to numerical approximations. You'll find all the familiar names from your undergrad Math and Physics courses here (Newton, Gauss, Largrange, etc.); however, advanced methods in Numerical Analysis has changed tremendously since this book was published. Since NA is dependent on present computing power, what was once too expensive or unthinkable in the 70s can be done today. However, it's still a great introduction and a great bargain from Dover. The writing style is informal and conversationally peer-to-peer, rather than teacher-to-student. There is no historic consciousness placing methods and men in context. You won't find programming algorithms here (not even Fortran or Pascal). There are probably better books out there for what ever your specific speciality is, but at five times the price of this Dover reprint. You'll will find the old favorites here. The book covers the various finite difference approximations (forward, backward and central differences). It uses the operational approach for these. The later chapters cover splines, continued fraction and iterative methods. More importantly it covers the difference between round-off error v. truncation of divergent series in approximations -- something that still confuses practicing professionals. Be warned there have been many improvements in theory and methods in finite element methods of Fluid Dynamics and other 3D modeling (bezier and NURBS); And, the whole world of Complexity and Chaos theory happened well AFTER this book was published. Calculus and Differential EQs are prerequisite, there's no attempt at introduction in the text.

Great book
This book is really one of the best books on numerical analysis I've ever seen. It is simple but complete.

Irish Crochet: Technique and Projects (Dover Needlework Series)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (November, 1984)
Authors: Priscilla Publishing Co. and Priscilla Publishing Co
Average review score:

One of my favorite needlework books!
Finding this book was a revelation to me! This unabridged reprint of the Priscilla Irish Crochet Book first published in 1909 by The Priscilla Publishing Company in Boston is filled with exquisite Irish crochet such as is rarely seen or made today. Leaf through this book and you will be astounded by the breathtaking delicacy and intricacy of which a hook and a thread is capable! Three-dimensional roses, shamrocks, thistles, passion flowers, daisies, blackberries, grapevines, chysantheums, and myriad other motifs and floral pendants, with instructions for making up -- using the various background and edge stitches -- into a variety of beautiful items, from edgings, insertions, medallions, and doilies to stunning masterpieces such as purses, collars, cuffs, portrait hats, blouses, gowns, and coats. With crochet hooks in sizes ranging from 13 through 16 and cotton threads in sizes 40 up to 100, I have made a many of the projects in this book, all absolutely spectacular!

Terrific book on an almost lost art
This book opened a whole new dimension of crochet for me. --Beautiful, mind-boggling stuff. The directions are quite accurate although rather different from modern crochet books. Loved it!! This book was 1st published in 1907, and raised rather interesting questions, like :how big was an Irish match 93 years ago? You are supposed to wrap cord around 1 to 4 matches. My answer: best to add one to their count- I use 3 Chinese wooden skewers for their 2 matches!!

A Leighton genealogy : descendants of Thomas Leighton of Dover, New Hampshire
Published in Unknown Binding by New England Historic Genealogical Society ()
Author: Perley M. Leighton
Average review score:

Authoritative and well documented Leighton Genealogy
Perley M. Leighton's work was cited by George F. Sanborn Jr., FASG, as "one of the best twentieth-century genealogies of a major northern New England family." I echo his sentiments. The 1989 books are out-of-print with reprints unlikely in the near future. LEIGHTON GENEALOGY ON CD includes the entire two volumes by Perley Leighton in original format with recent updates, electronically searchable and includes photos, documents, maps and more. Information at jpnotes.com.

Leighton Genealogy Must Have
Perley Leighton has done the Leighton Clan a great service in compiling this history of the family's origin in the new world and their spread throughout the US. It is the foremost reference for researching Thomas Leighton's descendants.

Life in Ancient Greece Coloring Book (Dover Coloring Book)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (April, 1993)
Authors: John Green and Stanley Appelbaum
Average review score:

Coloring Ancient Greece
I like this coloring book for children because it will help bring lessons on Ancient Greece to life and reinforce basic facts. It is organized primarily by chronology, has fairly complex drawings with enough detail and background for interest, and most significantly contains a brief historical note at the bottom of each picture. It includes highligts like Solon introducing reforms, Hipparchus being assasinated, Socrates being found guilty and condemned to death and Aristotle tutoring young Alexander. It also includes more general topics like weddings and funerals, the market, shipping and more. There is some male nudity (not frontal) like at the Gymnasium and Olympics. There is some incorporation of Greek mythology (like sculpting of a statue of Hermes, and consulting an oracle at Delphi.) Note, however, the art is not done in Ancient Greek style, but rather more realistic, scene by scene.

This is good for any grade schooler or even a high schooler who still likes to color. The covers and inside covers have art which are the colored scenes of ones found in the book, so there is also some direction or incentive to make the art come to life.

Useful alone or with a curriculum.

Great Resource
I use the Dover coloring books often as I home school. The kids are busy, quiet AND they listen. It really helps to reinforce the lessons when they color the same things that they are learning about. There is a Dover book for most major subjects!

The Lower Depths (Dover Thrift Editions)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (April, 2000)
Authors: Maksim Gorky and Jenny Covan
Average review score:

The Truth Behind "The Lower Depths"
The central theme of "The Lower Depths" is not only the total aniquilation of human personality by misery,in the harsh struggle for life that,so many times takes Men to degrade themselves but also,a statement that that aniquilation never is complete and that the very "Ex-Men",like in another book Gorki will call them, still have a conscience, the dream to overcome misery itself,a human warmth capable of being shared and ease.

A Must-read!

good Russian play
In a crowded dark room live the dregs of Russian society: a thief, a prostitute, her pimp, and several other criminals and outcasts. The general humdrum drama of their lives goes on as they get into fights, have disagreements, counsel one another over their losses, and so on.

Luka, an idealistic spiritual sort, finds his way into the group, and starts to spread his message of hope and positive thinking. This spurs the plot along a bit, because many in the group are hard-bitten realists who have no truck with faith or hope.

This is a fine play by Maxim Gorky. Gorky doesn't have the number of famous plays that someone like Henrik Ibsen or George Bernard Shaw does. In fact, he might be better known for his memoir of his childhood than for this play.

Nevertheless, The Lower Depths is a great play. The gritty element described in the play makes it seem much more like a modern play than the 1902 publication date would indicate. The realistic dialogue and streetwise characters make it hard to put down.

The Magic Flute Vocal Score (Dover Vocal Scores)
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (March, 2001)
Author: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Average review score:

Singing it
Beautifull music for Sopran (Pamina and Queen of the night) and for Bariton (Papageno). (Also Tenor (Tamino) and Bas (Sarastro))
The book has all the highlights from the opera, clearly writen for Piano and Vocals. Some bits are easier, some harder, but the music is superb!

Magical!
This is a great piano reduction of the score. Most of the songs are not overly difficult to play, and they are written in the original keys. I like to play along on the piano as I listen to the music on the CD! This one comes highly recommended.
